I can’t believe that September has come to an end; it’s the halfway point of the First Quarter. I hope everyone is settling in nicely to the school year. Time sure flies when you’re having fun—and when you’re super busy!
Due to weather warnings in September, our Middle School Retreats had to be canceled. Luckily, Pastor Lynne was able to secure dates in October for the Eighth Grade Retreat: Wednesday, October 19th, through Friday, October 21st. Seventh Grade and Sixth Grade Retreats will also be rescheduled to then. Updated information (permission slips, schedules, etc.) will be sent home soon.
Our Jaguar sports teams have had exciting seasons thus far—including a Homecoming win for our football team yesterday! If you have the chance to catch our Jaguar athletes in action before the seasons end, please do so. Both teams have home games on Thursday, October 6th (Football @ 3:45/Volleyball @ 4:00). Come cheer on our Jags!!
The Early Childhood Academy recently hosted its annual Man in My Life Night event, welcoming dads, grandpas, and other important men in students’ lives. They were invited to participate in Circle Time, songs, crafts, and more! Next month, the ECA is celebrating diversity with International Week. Students will sample foods from all over the world and learn about different cultures. Call Dolores at (561) 278-7735 for more information.
At the end of the First Quarter, students in Grades Three through Eight will have the opportunity to be honored for academic achievement in a Distinction/High Distinction ceremony after Morning Prayer. To earn Distinction, a student must have earned an 85.5% or above and an effort grade of “O” or “VG” in all subjects and Specials on the First Quarter Report Card. Qualifications for High Distinction are the same for effort grades (“O” or “VG”); however, final averages for the First Quarter must be 91.5% or above in all subjects and Specials. If you have questions regarding Distinction and/or High Distinction, please let me know.
An exciting opportunity for our Middle School students is to become members of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) and/or the Spanish Junior Honor Society (SJHS). To be eligible for NJHS, students must possess five characteristics: scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship. Students must earn a 91.5% in all courses at the end of the first semester to be considered for membership. A faculty/staff committee will then determine which students qualify for an official membership invitation. The purpose of SJHS is to promote cross-cultural acceptance and understanding in students of Spanish and to encourage service to school and community. This certificate of excellence is awarded to students with an average of 90% and above over the past year and a half of Spanish studies. Induction ceremonies for both honor societies take place in the spring.
A new change to our monthly calendar is instituting schoolwide “Fun Fridays”! All students in Grades One through Eight will participate in 45 minutes of fun activities—occurring either indoors or outside—once a month. This initiative demonstrates the importance of unstructured playtime with our friends and peers—and what better way to do it than on a Friday afternoon?! Our first “Fun Friday” will occur this afternoon!
Update your calendars! ERB testing has been rescheduled from the end of May to the week of April 3rd. This will allow students to focus on the skills they’ve learned throughout the year and to ensure that they perform to their best potential—rather than think about the impending summer. :-) As always, parents will be notified via e-mail to schedule a meeting with me to review scores when they become available.
Don’t forget to donate to the Jaguar Fund! Words cannot express how grateful I am to the many generous contributions we’ve already received. Your gifts will benefit the lives of all students at Saint Joseph’s, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support of our wonderful school.
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please reach out to the Office, to teachers, to Division Heads, and/or to me directly. The relationship between home and school is essential to all of us at St. Joe’s!
